JOHN P.

YIRKU

A Veteran First Responder, Mental Wellness Advocate, and Coach.

About John P. Yirku

I am a firefighter/EMT and continue to serve my community with more than 30 years of experience in fire rescue, EMS, law enforcement, and corrections. I’ve responded to thousands of calls over the years, some with a happy ending, many not. What I wasn’t expecting were the days that came a long time after the sirens had stopped. Like many of my brothers and sisters in the service, I am also proud to wear the uniform; however, inside my world was beginning to unravel. That journey, the untold one, behind the badge, is what brought me to where I am now. Today, I am a certified coach and national speaker on the mental wellness issues affecting first responders and emergency personnel. I have had the distinct honor of sharing the story of my life and doing training throughout the nation that equips others to recognize the signs of trauma, respond with resilience, ask for real support, and begin the challenging yet hopeful process of restoration. My wife, who works alongside me as a firefighter and EMT, is my true partner in life and service. Together, we are determined to live what we teach: family first, faith always, and life beyond the uniform.

Life Doesn’t End When the Shift Does

The hardest fights usually start after the siren stops. When the Siren Stops presents true stories, valuable tools, and a biblically based journey of healing for first responders. John P. Yirku reminds people that life beyond the uniform is not only possible, but it can also be purposeful and hopeful.
